Today marks a milestone for our First Lady, who we affectionately call FLOTUS. It is First Lady Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday! She epitomizes all that is phenomenal, fabulous and fly in women across the nation. So today we want to take a look at the life of Mrs. Michelle Obama.
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, was born to parents Fraser Robinson and Marian Shields on January 17th 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a two-story house in Chicago’s South Shore community area. Michelle’s brother Craig was two years older than her. The family often entertained themselves by reading or playing monopoly with each other.
By the time Michelle was in sixth grade, she joined a gifted class at Bryn Mawr Elementary School. She later attended Whitney Young High School, Chicago’s first magnet high school, where she was classmates with Santita, the daughter of civil rights leader, Jesse Jackson. Michelle was on the honor roll for four years, took advance placement classes, and served as student council treasurer. She graduated in 1981 as salutatorian of her class.
Michelle’s brother Craig, attended Princeton University which inspired her to attend as well. She majored in sociology and minored in African American studies and in 1985 graduated cum laude with a Bachelor Of Art. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1988.
Michelle met Barack Obama, at a law firm where they were the only two African American lawyers in the firm. They started dating. They married in October 1992 and have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
After Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008, Michelle’s position as First Lady began. During the first few months Michelle visited homeless shelters, and soup kitchens. She was an advocate on behalf of military families, she helped women balance career and family and helped with promoting the arts and arts education.
The First Lady encourages good healthy eating and exercising, especially for children. She created “Let’s Move” a comprehensive initiative, dedicated to solving the problem with obesity in our generation.
Michelle takes care of herself, by eating nutritional foods and exercising. She’ll be celebrating a milestone soon. She describes herself as “50 and fabulous.” “I have never felt more confident in myself, more clear on who I am as a woman.” The First Lady stated. Apparently Michelle has already started to celebrate her 50th birthday. She was spotted in Hawaii with girlfriend Oprah Winfrey, after a family vacation with Barack and their two daughters. Michelle shares that her husband has plans for a birthday bash, Saturday January 18th and has instructed their guests to eat before they arrive and to dress comfortable.
With just three years left in the White House, Michelle could take on new tasks or different roles. In time we’ll see.
